I am 5'8" tall, 46" chest, 36" waist, yes I am the short fat bloke, however it would appear that this country is full of short fat blokes. For years British Home Stores was my place to go, they always had stuff in 'SHORT' sizes, so I pretty much got everything I needed, suits and stuff I have are bespoke or off the shelf but adjusted to fit, my favourite shop for these is Moss Bros, always managed to find a quality suit or jacket.
So I have for the past 3 weeks been trying to find a Tweed Jacket in Brown with a blue line or check, every shop I have visited have them, but not in my size, when I ask do you have this in 46s the reply is always the same, 'I'm sorry sir, we are sold out', so I decided I would go online, same thing no one has this particular jacket in my size, so I started to do some research.Today, the average man is 5ft 9in, weighs 12st 6lbs and has a chest of 42in and a waist of 37in. He wears size nine shoes, has a collar size of 16.
So why can't I find the size I want, it would appear that my size isn't that unusual, but, they make fewer than the other sizes, now if I was a women I would have a large choice from the 'Petite' range of clothing, but for me NOTHING.
So my only option it seems is to go to someone like Moss Bros and get a larger size altered to fit, so I contact the london shop and guess what, They have none, I mean NONE in stock, so I phone head office, they tell me that they have none in any of there shops at the moment, but, come October, November, they should have some in, so I say can you order a 46s, the shops will have all sizes, I ask can I place an order for on in 46s? You can go to the shop and ask them to put one aside for you when they come in, I Thank the young lady and call the london shop, they say, that cannot put one aside neither can they contact me when they arrive. So it looks like it going to be a lot of jacket hunting for me over the next month or so.
And while I am on the subject of clothing for the short fat bloke, my shirt size is 17" so not that big, however it doesn't matter where I buy them from the sleeves are always far to long, so I have to wear a sleeve garters, OK so that's not much of an issue but remember the average size of a man in the UK is not that different from me so why not make shirts in 17L, 17M and 17S? I know I can have them made, and I already have some bespoke shirts, but for everyday wear, 'I like nice crispy white shirt' I don't want to spend £50 - £100. So come manufacturers, it's up to you to get your act together, the national average man needs your help.
Moan over for today, I am going shopping later to see if I can find a jacket, then off for a nice meal with my son this evening, what could go wrong? I'm sure I can find something to blog about tomorrow.
